Abstract

Despite their tiny brains, bumblebees can be trained and tested in controlled behavioural tasks, allowing us to study perception, learning, memory, affect, decision-making, and social cognition. In this talk, I will introduce the basic logic of bee training and testing, and discuss recent studies showing how bees learn, compare options, use social information, and generalize beyond immediate experience. Studying the bee mind offers a broader comparative perspective on the core principles of cognition across species.
