Abstract

Social interactions are crucial for the survival of socias pecies such as humans. Documenting this fact, there is evidence that social interactions, and resulting social modulation processes, belong to the most important predictors for physical and mental health. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We investigate social modulation effects in the laboratory using behavioural modeling and neuroscience methods, and validate these effects in real life. in the first part of my talk, l will present some of our work addressing the effects of real and virtual social presence on autonomic responses and behaviour. The second part of my talk will address socia modulation of neural responses, with a specific focus on learning-related plasticity and empathy. Finally, l will give an overview of our work on social modulation in everyday life in healthy and clinical samples. Taken together, the presented findings provide evidence for social modulation effects on different levels of processing, and highlight their societal and clinical relevance.
