Abstract:  Individuals suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) suffer from uncontrollable worrying about various topics. In order to successfully treat the disorder, it therefore is important to functionally understand this pathological symptom more clearly. In the workshop, I will lay out various explanations that have been put forward to explain the causes and consequences of worrying and will integrate them in a comprehensive model explaining the formation of GAD. Furthermore, based on this analysis, I will illustrate how to interlock three types of intervention that are especially helpful in treatments targeting GAD symptomology: metacognitive therapy targeting both negative and positive metacognitions concerning worrying; fear imagery exposure (also mislabeled “worry exposure”), based on the avoidance theory of worrying; interventions developed to increase tolerance of uncertainty.
