In everyday life, we need to determine our own positions and to localize objects (places) in the environment. In this talk, first I will contrast the roles of the piloting system and the path integration system in self positioning and goal localization. I will demonstrate that these two systems jointly determine people’s own positions in a cognitive map. Second, I will describe how people after disorientation use different piloting cues in goal localization and self-reorientation. I will contrast the functions of a boundary (i.e. a continuous wall) and a single landmark in object-localization. I will also examine cue interaction between a building and a street layout in reorientation. Last, I will talk about studies investigating how we use the path integration system to develop spatial memory and guide our navigation in environments separated by boundaries.
