Many neurological and psychiatric illnesses result in cognitive impairments, which seriously impact the health outcomes of patients. However, the treatments for cognitive impairments are limited in both number and efficacy. Some people have questioned whether translational research with animals in this area is doomed to fail and many pharmaceutical companies have closed their neuropsychiatric research programs. In this presentation, I will discuss some of the reasons that progress has been limited to date and point out areas where we could improve the approach. I will describe a test developed in my laboratory that enables measurement of cognition in the rat that is not a ‘model’ of human cognition, but is truly equivalent. Using this test, we have been able to develop a better understanding of the psychological processes and their neural substrates. Furthermore, in the rat, we are able to test agents that might ultimately lead to new approaches to developing drug treatments for disorders such as schizophrenia.
