Decision making is a hallmark of intelligence fundamental to an organism’s well-being and survival. Perceptual decision-making builds on previous extensive knowledge of the sensory and motor systems to understand the link between sensation and action. Based on my research, I will discuss how computational modelling and dynamical systems theory can provide insights into the neural dynamics and mechanisms underlying perceptual decision-making. In particular, the modelling and analysis of decision dynamics can account for decision “perturbations” due to sensory stimuli, endogenous brain chemicals and cognitive control, and some aspects of mental disorders.
