Remembering specific past events and their details allows us to mentally travel back in time to re-experience our previous experiences. It is regarded as a unique human cognitive faculty and a true marvel of nature. I discuss how this fundamental process is variably motivated across cultures. By delineating cultural factors that shape our memory and moderate the consequence of our remembering, I highlight the central role of culture in human memory and cognition.
