A core element of knowledge-intensive work is that high-quality performance relies on employees’ proactive contributions to team and organizational objectives. Drawing from different strands of research on leadership and motivation, I propose that what I call values-based leadership – leadership that aims to build a shared, value-based sense of purpose, is particularly effective in intrinsically motivating such proactive contributions. I further outline how the effectiveness of such values-based leadership is contingent on empowering leadership to develop followers to self-manage in making proactive contributions. I present initial evidence speaking to these propositions from two survey studies.
