The central thesis of this presentation is that religiosity is not an innate human characteristic but it rather serves mundane psychological needs. In particular, the presentation offers the hypothesis that religiosity serves the need to self-enhance. People (in part) endorse religiosity in order to feel good about themselves, and in order to feel special and superior. Empirical evidence will be discussed in support of the hypothesis. Some of the specific questions that the research has addressed are: Do participants at a religious induction event believe that God has a special relationship with them over others? Do religious persons use religiosity to derive a sense of personal superiority over others? And do religious persons claim (falsely) a deep knowledge of religious doctrine in order to feel good about themselves?
