Repeated study improves memory, but the underlying neural mechanisms for the effects of repeated study are not well understood. One related question is whether the presence of neural repetition suppression, which is usually associated with repeated practice, could impair subsequent episodic memory. In this talk, I will provide evidence from functional magnetic resonance imaging and representational similarity analysis to argue that pattern reinstatement, rather than encoding variability, is an important mechanism for successful episodic memory encoding. Although repeated study generally tempers pattern reinstatement, spaced learning could effectively reduce the repetition suppression and enhance learning.
