目标和宗旨

方方教授领导的视觉与脑成像实验室主要研究视知觉、意识、注意和它们的认知神经机制。我们密切结合认知科学、信息科学和神经科学的方法和理论,试图去理解人类认知过程中的一个核心问题 – 视觉系统是如何从双眼视网膜上的二维图像构建出对三维世界的表征,并识别出其中的物体。

研究内容

  1. 视皮层的可塑性研究。可塑性是指神经系统由于外部环境和任务的改变而引起的功能性变化,人类的大脑具有终生可塑性。我们的研究主要集中在视觉经验对神经信息加工的影响,视觉经验的时程可以从几百毫秒(启动效应),到数十秒(视觉适应),乃至数十小时(知觉学习)。对可塑性的研究,不仅可以使我们更好的了解视觉系统如何对外部信息实现动态优化加工,而且具有实际应用价值,如知觉学习可以提高弱视病人的视力水平。
  2. 视觉注意的认知神经机制。人类每一时刻都接受到大量的外界信息,而我们有限的心理资源和神经资源不可能同时处理这么多的信息,只能选择性的处理具有高优先性的信息而忽视低优先性的信息,注意的作用正是体现于此。视觉注意主要包括基于特征的注意、基于空间的注意和基于物体的注意。我们的研究主要关注这些类型的注意是如何产生的,以及它们如何调控视觉信息加工。
  3. 物体识别与表征的认知神经机制。视觉系统的核心功能是物体识别。人类可以轻而易举的在不同的视角,距离,光照条件下识别出同一个物体,即使该物体在视网膜上所成的二维图像完全不同。物体识别研究的关键在于研究物体在视觉系统中是如何表征和编码的。视觉系统是如何将简单的视觉特征组合转换,最终形成一个三维抽象的物体表征是视觉研究中的核心问题。
  4. 无意识视觉信息处理及其神经机制。Helmholtz早在一百多年前就提出视觉加工过程是一个无意识推理过程,这意味着视觉加工过程中的相当一部分是自动的、无需主观意识就可以完成的。如果把视觉加工过程比作浮在海面的一座冰山,有意识视觉加工过程相对于无意识视觉加工过程,犹如冰山在水面上的一角相对于水面下的巨大冰体。因此,为了能够充分理解视觉加工过程的本质,研究无意识视觉信息加工及其神经机制是非常有必要的。
  5. 情境效应在早期视皮层的神经表征。在传统的视觉信息加工理论中,早期视皮层的功能被认为是加工基本的局部信息,比如大小、边缘、亮度等,其神经活动反映的是视觉刺激的物理属性。然而,同样的局部信息放置于不同的情境或者背景中,视觉系统对它的知觉效果会截然不同,这个现象称之为情境效应。情境效应通常被认为是由高级皮层通过整合大范围空间信息来表征的。然而,我们通过一系列研究证明,通过高级皮层对早期视皮层的反馈调节机制,早期视皮层就可以在情境效应的表征中起到关键作用。
