Abstract

Retinal implants enable blind individuals to restore vision through electrical stimulation of the retina. However, prosthetic vision differs from natural human vision in several ways. This report will introduce the fundamental principles of retinal implants and various research studies examining how device parameters (such as field of view or video input) impact user performance in visual tasks. Additionally, it will compare the brain activity evoked by artificial and natural vision.

Bio

Dr. Yingchen He is an Assistant Professor in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Program at the Department of Psychology. She has been at NC State since 2020, directing the Translational Vision Research Lab. She completed her undergraduate study at Peking University and obtained her Ph.D. degree in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, MN. Her research focuses on the interaction between human factors and eye diseases. At the basic science level, she aims to understand the mechanism of visual perception in daily tasks such as reading, object recognition, and navigation. At the practical level, she applies her knowledge about human visual system to the development of training protocols, medical devices, and assistive technology.
