Abstract

How do we make decision and action in automated driving? In a series of experiments, we investigate human perception and behaviors in driving by virtual reality simulations. In the first experiment, we investigated human participants’ visual attention and eye movement, and their mental workload while driving in different weather and road conditions. When the drivers face ethical dilemma in driving, what would be the factors affecting their decision and actions? In the second experiment, we conducted data mining from the moral machine experiment (MME, Awad et al., 2018) data, in-person survey, and a behavioural experiment to test drivers’ responses toward dilemma situations, and to understand the motivations for their ethical preferences and decisions. Our findings will not only shed light on the perception, cognitive and action process, but also philosophical understanding of ethical dilemmas in automated driving.

Bio:

Dr. Hong Xu is Associate Professor of Psychology, Associate Chair (Research) in School of Social Sciences, with a joint appointment in School of Computer Science and Engineering, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She obtained Ph.D. in Psychology, Master's in Statistics, both from University of Chicago, and B.S. in Psychology from Peking University. After her postdoctoral training at Columbia University, she joined NTU as a faculty. Her research expertise is in visual neuroscience, perception and its application to human-computer interaction and user experience.
